The mass of a book is one of the largest topics that gets missed in our current culture. Many people, especially in North America and Europe, think of a book as being roughly the size of a paperback book.
In recent years, there has been a influx of weight-focused books. These books have almost become expected as we move into adulthood, and life moves onto more significant things like relationships, marriage, and family.
These weight-focused books can be large: an average-sized novel or book series can weigh in at around 1 to 1.5 kg (2 to 2.5 lb). This is huge! We often forget the scale-image that we have for a small book like this.
This is why it is important for people to look at these weight-focused books with an open mind.
Calculate the number of pages in the book
If the length of the book is 5 km and the length of the book is 1.5 kg, what amount of pages would you find?
The length of the book in km is 5, so there are 5 x 5 = 125 pages in it. The length of the book in cm is 1, so there are 1 + 0 = 1 cm long pages.
If you look at the front and back covers, you’d find that the book has a total page count of 612 pages. This makes it about 612 x 1.5 = 616 kg or 616 ÷ 12 = 44 lb or 2½ kgs.
A heavy book may have more pages because of its size and weight.
Calculate the thickness of each page
books can be fairly thin, and sometimes the thickness of a page can be measured in millimetres or inches.
If the thickness of a book is 1.5 kg (2 lb 2.6 oz), then its length is 24 cm (9 inches) and its width is 22 cm (8 inches).
These sizes depend on what kind of book you are talking about – a novel may be half the size of an e-book, for example. Or a magazine may be half the size of a hardcover book.

Calculate the total surface area of the book
When we talk about the mass of a book, we are talking about how much space it takes up in relation to its thickness.
A thick book will have a higher mass because it must take more space than a lightweight book. A lightweight book will have less space than a thick one due to thickness.
The mass of the book can be misleading when it comes to pricing. Some retailers will price a thin, lightweight book at a premium over a thicker, heavier book because they believe the thinner one is worth more.

The weight of a book is equal to the weight of the paper it is printed on multiplied by 100, or 215 g for 545 bp of paper.
The percentage of ink coverage on a book is its thickness, or thickness in mils. Thicknesses range from 0.01 mil to 1 mil, or tiny lines and squares.
Most books are about 0.5–1 kg (1–2 lb), making them about 25% ink and 1% paper. The remaining content is the author’s words.
A mass of 1.5 kg (2 lb) has almost one kilogram (2 lb) of ink and almost no paper left, making it almost completely void of content.

While a paperback book with a mass of 1.5 kg (2.2 lb) is rare, it does happen. The world’s most expensive book, at €150,000 (about $200,000), is a 1.5-kg (2.6-lb) hardcover titled The First Great Miracle by Pierre Omidyar, an Iraqi Christian who fled his country after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
Omidyar purchased the book for $50,000 in 2006 and donated it to the United Nations World Food Program when he was unable to afford it on his own. The UN gave it the title First because it was the first humanitarian relief effort after an earthquake in Iraq!

The mass of a book is directly related to the length of its pages. Books with longer pages require more material to hold it closed, and open.
The standard length of a book is 6 inches long and 1 inch thick. A book with a mass of 1.5 kg (2 lb) would be 6 x 1 x 0.6 = 6,000 mm³ (6 feet³) or 6 feet³, making it the longest published book in the world.
A medium-size book might have a mass between 1 and 2 kg (2 and 4 lb), so that divide by two to get the appropriate weight: 2 x 1 x 0.5 = 50 g (0.05 oz). Smaller books may have less material to hold it closed or open, which may be less cost-effective than larger books.

This is the mass of a book with a mass of 1.5 kg, the weight of an 18-megapixel digital camera.
The size of a digital camera is around 0.3 square inches, or 8 x 8 x 8 mm. That is not much space to work with!
A novel with 1.5 kg in weight will be very heavy to transport and store. There may be issues with its quality, such as shadows and noise being present in the image.
