With the release of the newest version of the operating system, iOS 12, a few bugs have been reported that could allow someone to access your photos and files.
One of these bugs allows users to take screen shots of other apps without permission. Because of this bug, screenshots can be taken without the user knowing.
This is a major security flaw that needs to be fixed immediately. Not only can people take screen shots of other apps without your knowledge, but they can save those files where they wish.
They can even delete those files if they wished, and you would have no idea until it was too late. This is a serious issue that needs to be fixed.
Could mess up the organization of your files
Since the screen capture tool automatically saves files in your Downloads folder, you do not have permission to save files in that location.
The browser automatically assigns a new name to the file and then places it in the Downloads folder, which could cause confusion.
Since the file is automatically saved in your Downloads folder, you also do not have permission to delete the file. The only way to clear up space on your computer or phone is to delete all of the files in your Downloads folder.
Because of this, some people choose to disable the automatic saving of screen captures because of the inconvenience it causes. It is always best to be aware of how technology works so that you can avoid any issues later on.
Affects only certain operating systems
As of now, this bug has only been tested on Windows 10. There is no guarantee that it will not affect other operating systems, but for now, assume that it only affects Windows 10.
The bug was not tested on MacOS or Android, so it is unknown if it will affect those operating systems. Since the issue is with the system and not the app, it most likely would affect them.
As of now, there is no way to completely fix this bug. The best thing you can do at this point is be careful and assume that anyone can take a screen shot of your desktop at any time.
You can limit who has access to your computer by changing the settings for who can log into the device, but that does not fix the issue. Anyone who knows how to take a screen shot can still obtain your personal information.
Not all programs save to the same location
When taking a screen shot, the program saves the file in its own designated folder. It does not pull from your desktop or any other files or folders. it
If you were to look in the location of the screen shot file, you would see only that one file, not all of the files and folders on your desktop. it
Because of this, when you try to save a screen shot in the correct location, it will not work. The program does not have permission to save there and will give an error. it
The solution is to simply give the program permission to save in that location. It is as easy as going into File Manager and creating a new folder if one does not already exist. it
Do this for both the old and new apps so that they both have access to the same locations.
Use the same location for all programs
Once you have found the correct folder, you need to make sure all other programs save their files in the same folder.
All screen capture apps have a default save location where they save the files they create. If you change the default save location for one app, it will not change the default save location for other apps.
That is why it is important to use the same folder as a default save location for all screen capture apps. All of your screenshots will go into one place, making it easy to find and organize them later.
Some people have a hard time remembering things, and that can be especially true with computer settings and locations. Create a post-it note with all of the important folders and locations and stick it somewhere that you will see it often.
Create a directory for screenshots only
A good way to prevent accidental saves is to create a directory (or folder) specifically for screenshots. By doing this, you will be forcing yourself to only save your screenshot to this specific folder, which can be easy to remember.
Many platforms have a built-screen capture feature that allows you to take a screenshot and immediately save it in your profile or message it to someone.
By creating a screenshots folder, you can easily add this location as an exclusion in the app’s settings, preventing any chance of the file being saved somewhere else.
It is also easy to organize your screenshots by date in a Screenshots folder, making it simple to find and view them.
Set a default destination for saving screenshots
You can also set a default location for saving screenshots, which is a little more advanced.
Open the Windows Registry and find the “SaveImage” value under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\PreferencesDomainService.
The SaveImage value contains the path to the screenshot save folder, so you can change this path to any location of your choosing. You can also delete this value if you would like to set a default location for saving screenshots.
By doing this, every time you take a screenshot, it will be saved in that location instead of being prompted with a window asking you where to save it. It is best to do this before taking any screenshots so that they are all saved in the same place.
Use a screenshot program
As an alternative or addition to the keyboard shortcut method, you can use a screenshot program. Screenshot programs have their own settings and ways of taking a screen shot, which can be an advantage.
Some screenshot programs have the ability to edit your screen shot before saving it, others have stealth mode where the cursor does not appear, and some have the ability to take a full-screen shot.
Some of these features can be very helpful in specific situations. For example, if you need to take a screenshot of a website that has an interactive feature that shows your personal information, then using stealth mode will prevent that from being saved.
However, some of these features may not work on every computer or operating system, so check if they work before using them.
Set file creation permissions
The next thing you should do is set the file creation permissions. By default, Android doesn’t allow you to create files in external storage.
You can’t save images in the default SD card storage or create folders or files in there. You can, however, create images and files in your device’s built-in memory.
This is a good thing to check because it might save you a lot of trouble later on. You can check this by going to Settings>Storage>Internal Storage and checking whether you can Create Folder here or Save Images Here. If you cannot, then you are protected from any potential ADB errors that might occur due to file creations in external storage.
If you are able to Create Folder Here and Save Images Here then just go back and disable that ability by setting the File Creation Permission off.
